How long do Bitcoin and Monero transfers take?

Bitcoin blocks average 10 minutes, Monero blocks 2 minutes, but that's not the whole story. Here's how confirmations, fees and Monero's 10-block lock decide how long your transfer takes.

"Where's my transaction?" is probably the most common question in crypto. The honest answer is that it depends on the blockchain, the fee you paid and a bit of luck. Here's what actually decides how long a Bitcoin or Monero transfer takes, and what that means for a swap between the two.

The short version

BitcoinMonero
Average block timeAbout 10 minutesAbout 2 minutes
When a transfer shows upWithin seconds, as unconfirmedWithin a minute or two
When it's considered settledUsually 1 to 6 confirmationsSpendable after 10 confirmations
Typical time to "done"10 to 60 minutesAbout 20 minutes

What a confirmation is

When you send coins, your transaction first goes into a waiting area called the mempool. Miners pick transactions from the mempool and bundle them into a block. Once your transaction is in a block, it has one confirmation. Every block added after that is another confirmation.

More confirmations make a transaction harder to reverse. That's why exchanges and swap services wait for a few before treating a deposit as final.

Why Bitcoin times vary so much

Bitcoin aims for one block every 10 minutes, but that's an average. Blocks are found randomly. You'll regularly see two blocks a minute apart, and now and then you'll wait 30 or 40 minutes for the next one. Nobody can speed that up.

What you can control is the fee. Miners prefer transactions that pay more per byte of space, measured in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB). When the mempool is quiet, a few sat/vB gets you into the next block or two. When it's busy, low-fee transactions can wait hours.

Stuck with a low fee?

If your Bitcoin transaction is taking forever, you have two common fixes:

  • Replace-by-fee (RBF): many wallets let you rebroadcast the same transaction with a higher fee. Look for a "bump fee" or "speed up" button.
  • Child-pays-for-parent (CPFP): if you're the receiver, you can spend the unconfirmed coins with a high fee, which encourages miners to confirm both transactions together.

Before sending, check a fee estimator such as mempool.space. Right now about 3 sat/vB is enough for confirmation within roughly half an hour.

Why Monero waits for 10 blocks

Monero blocks come about every two minutes, five times faster than Bitcoin. But received Monero can't be spent right away. The protocol locks new outputs for 10 blocks, about 20 minutes. Your wallet shows the incoming payment within a minute or two, often marked as "locked" or "pending", and then it unlocks automatically.

Monero fees are also set differently. Wallets choose a fee based on network conditions, usually a few cents, and you rarely need to think about it. Stuck Monero transactions are uncommon.

What this means for an XMR–BTC swap

A swap involves two transfers: yours to the service and the service's payout to you. Each one has its own waiting time.

XMR to BTC:

  1. You send XMR. It appears on the network within a couple of minutes.
  2. The service waits for 10 Monero confirmations, about 20 minutes.
  3. Your BTC is sent. Your wallet shows it right away as unconfirmed.
  4. The first Bitcoin confirmation usually follows within 10 to 30 minutes.

BTC to XMR:

  1. You send BTC. How fast it confirms depends on the fee you chose.
  2. The service waits for 2 Bitcoin confirmations, on average about 20 minutes.
  3. Your XMR is sent and appears in your wallet within minutes.
  4. It becomes spendable after 10 Monero blocks.

That's why most swaps on QuietSwap take 20 to 60 minutes. The swap itself is quick. The waiting is the blockchains doing their job.

How to make your transfer faster

  • Use a normal fee for Bitcoin deposits. Saving a few cents with the lowest fee can cost you an hour.
  • Send from your own wallet, not an exchange. Some exchanges batch withdrawals and send them later.
  • Keep your Monero wallet synced. An out-of-date wallet won't show new payments until it catches up.
  • Send from a SegWit wallet if you can. Transactions from bc1 addresses are smaller, so the same priority costs you less.

FAQ

How many confirmations does Bitcoin need?

There's no single rule. One confirmation is enough for small payments. Exchanges often use 2 to 6. QuietSwap starts the swap after 2.

Why is my Monero locked?

New Monero is locked for 10 blocks, about 20 minutes. It's a network rule. Your funds unlock automatically.

Can I cancel a Bitcoin transaction?

Not once it's confirmed. While it's still unconfirmed, a wallet that supports RBF can replace it with a new transaction, for example back to yourself with a higher fee.

Why does my wallet show the coins but I can't spend them?

For Bitcoin, the transaction may still be unconfirmed. For Monero, it's probably inside the 10-block lock. Wait a little and check again.
